Graphite Design Shafts Menu

graphite design shaft chart

Graphite Design rates all their shafts somewhere between “Very Stiff” and “Soft” in each section. The Tour AD UB is rated Medium+, Medium+, Stiff+ from butt to tip. This is very similar to the Tour AD DI which is Medium, Medium, Stiff.

In the chart below, the VF is the lowest spinning and lowest launch angle shaft in the Graphite Design line. Visit proschoicegolfshafts.com for more detailed specifications. Players who want something different than the flood of “low/low” shafts should enjoy the Graphite Design Tour AD UB.

The shaft nearest in tip stiffness is the Tour AD UB [review HERE] which rates a Stiff+. Finally, in looking over Graphite Design’s website, I noticed something very interesting. Despite the feel similarities between the AD DI and the AD UB, Graphite Design places the performance of the AD UB nearest the Tour AD HD [review HERE]. For comparison, the AD HD is rated Firm, Firm, Firm+ which is substantially different than either DI or UB.

Graphite Design Shafts Menu – Current Offerings

All of this to say, it’s critical to test things for yourself and get fit. I find Graphite Design’s feel rating to map well against my feel, but you may not. In testing the Tour AD UB on my Foresight GCQuad, I was very impressed by the launch angle. Looking at the shot shape alone, I was expecting the ball to come out fairly low. However, I was getting high launch that kept my carry distance very near optimal.

Moving up to 50 grams retains those three options and adds the X flex. In the past, I’ve described some super stiff shafts as laughing at your strongest swings. When I bumped up to the TX, I did feel laughed at – I don’t have the speed to make that work. When it comes to technologically advanced, high-performance golf shafts, it’s difficult to look past Graphite Design.

Though it’s one of the oldest shafts in their catalog, the Graphite Design Tour AD DI continues to be a favorite and a winner throughout golf [review HERE]. In fact, as of this publication, it’s the driver shaft of the reigning Masters champion. With so much success, it makes sense that Graphite Design would try to emulate the AD DI in their newer offerings, which they’ve done with the Tour AD UB. While I would not typically suggest that recreational players emulate Tiger Woods’s equipment decisions, the Graphite Design Tour AD VF shaft is one that you might consider.

The materials used in Graphite Design Shafts, are among the lightest and strongest resin systems and composite materials. These premium materials were developed specifically for golf club shafts. These space-age materials are very thin, which allows the shafts to be manufactured with many more layers to precisely control the weights, flexes, torques, and bend profiles. Just like the difference between tearing one sheet of paper versus trying to tear a phone book in half. The special composite weave patterns used are applied in crisscrossed layers to add additional strength and create highly stable loading(bending) and unloading(snap through).

If you’re a high spin player who wants to get into more optimal numbers, this is definitely one to try at your next fitting. When I went to the Graphite Design Tour AD VF in TX flex, it felt much more “anti-left.”  Even with an aggressive swing and a strong intent, I could barely square the face, let alone get the ball to draw. If you’re seeking a hooker-killer, the AD VF can be it, you may just need a stiffer flex. While Graphite Design claims that the Tour AD VF wasn’t made with Tiger in mind, it would be hard to imagine a shaft more perfectly designed for the Big Cat. The upper is a deep, rich red that is visually stunning, especially in contrast with the jet black lower portion.

So, these shafts are made to exceptionally high standards in Japan before being distributed to suppliers in different parts of the world, which is why they’re becoming more and more popular in North America. Carbon fiber facilitates outstanding energy transfer, meaning that you can hit the ball longer and truer when using Graphite Design shafts. This is another thing that helps the brand stand out when compared to some of its competitors. The Graphite Design Tour AD UB is available in weights ranging from 40 grams to 80 grams.

The Graphite Design Tour AD UB sticks with the tried and true aesthetic of the Tour AD series but with one of the series’s bolder color choices. The upper portion of the shaft is a very attractive blue that I can best describe as a dark turquoise. Just below the branding, that shifts to silver for a less distracting look at address.

They are reasonably weighted, feature a torque of 3.5, and offer mid-high trajectory, making them suitable for most recreational players. But in terms of wood shafts, it really depends on what you’re looking for, as Graphite Design has so many options. Ultimately, Graphite Design manufactures outstanding, Tour quality golf shafts, which are a great option for your golf clubs this season.

What’s unique about the Tour AD VF – at least for me – is that it’s not strictly “anti-left” in the way that some low/low shafts are. Unless I made a really poor swing, I didn’t see the ball curving more than I wanted. Graphite Design shafts are manufactured in Japan and distributed by Pro’s Choice Golf Shafts in the United States and Canada. The brand has a great reputation in the golf industry, with popular models including the Tour AD UB (new for 2022) and the Graphite Design MAD shafts. VF shafts are FIRM+ in the butt section, STIFF in the mid section, and VERY STIFF in the tip section.

First, I could dial my swing down to sub-100% effort, which was refreshing after numerous all-out swings. I don’t think the AD DI is particularly draw-biased, but compared to the AD VF, it felt that way to me. Their business model means that they partner with distributors in different parts of the world, which is why US customers can buy Graphite Design shafts directly from Pro’s Choice Golf Shafts. It is funny though how these are supposed to be updates, but at least to me each shaft still feels very different from their “update”. If this fits my profile, I would love to replace this in my 5 wood.

I tested one to see if it can help power your on course victories this season. In fact, according to PGA Club Tracker, more than twenty golfers currently use Graphite Design shafts, which have contributed to the significant number of wins the brand has racked up on Tour in recent years. Several of the best golfers in the world use Graphite Design shafts, highlighting the significant quality of the brand. For instance, Jordan Speith uses Tour AD DI 95 X hybrid shafts, while the likes of Kevin Na, Kyoung-Hoon Lee, and Martin Kaymer also play Graphite Design.
